I’ve been always confused by web, application, and web application. Then what is applications and how they are different from websites?

Web Apps

Web applications are websites with functionality and interactive elements. Gmail, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc are web apps that are dynamic, and built for user engagement. Since web apps carry out a wide range of functionality, they are more difficult to build and require and experienced developers. Technically, a web application is computer software accessed through a web browser, often connected to a database to provide an interactive experience to the user. In web apps, data can be referenced, stored, and accessed through a customized interface.

Websites

Websites are accessible through browsers such as Internet Explorer, Chrome, etc. Websites are static which means that the contents doesn’t update realtime. Most websites are built using HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Website are one-way informational feeds, the users are not allowed to communicate back to them. Mobile websites are designed for smaller touch screens and responsive design websites automatically adjust to the size and type of browser where they are displayed.
